一、教学目标

1. Students can understand the structure and the content of the article.

2. Students can master some new words and their suffixes: adulthood, relationship, -hood, -ship.

3. Students can learn to use the reading skills during their reading, such as skimming, scanning, careful reading.

4. Students can learn to communicate honestly with their parents.

二、教学重难点

Teaching key point:

Students can master the main idea and detailed information of the article as well as the words and suffixes.

Teaching difficult point:

Students can use the reading skills in practice.

三、教学过程

Step 1. Lead-in

Students answer the question: What physical and mental changes do you experience as you become a teenager?

【设计意图】通过问答激发学生的学习兴趣,同时借助本活动引入本节课的内容。

Step 2. Pre-reading

Students look at the title and pictures on the book and guess the main idea of the passage and the meaning of the title.

【设计意图】读前环节通过观看文章题目及配图引发思考,为之后读中环节活动做铺垫。

Step 3. While-reading

Skimming

Students read the article quickly and find out the main idea of the article and the meaning of the title.

Scanning

Students read the article again and fill the chart according to the article.

Careful reading

Students read the passage for the third time and learn the new words and suffixes and answer the question: What is the author’s attitude to parent-child tensions?

【设计意图】通过回答问题、填写表格等阅读活动,既能帮助学生理解、提取与归纳信息,又能培养学生的批判思维能力。

Step 4. Post-reading

Students should have a discussion about whether teenagers should seek independence in groups.

【设计意图】学生通过话题讨论,对文章内容进行内化并互补运用从语篇中学到的新词汇。

Step 5. Summary

Students summarize what they have learned in this lesson, and the teacher gives some supplements if necessary. Then the teacher can lead students to communicate with their parents calmly. And the teacher will encourage students to apply the new knowledge in real life when talking about personal problems.

【设计意图】学生自我总结本节课的重点,可以突出学生的主体地位,教师进行必要的情感引导,有利于学生形成正确的价值观。

Step 6. Homework

Students read the article again and talk about their feelings with their parents.

【设计意图】课后作业可以使学生更好地理解本节课的内容,并学会学以致用。
